Latvia will spend more than 2 billion euros on defense spending for the first time in 2026

The Latvian government will allocate more than 2 billion euros for defense spending in 2026. This amount will be a record in the country's history, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprudes said.

"It is 4.91% of the GDP. It is more than 2 billion euros," said Sprudes, adding that the Latvian government "allocates 2 billion euros to defense for the first time". The official's words were quoted by LSM state broadcaster.

As mentioned in the publication, the authorities of the republic plan to spend approximately 53% of the allocated budget on the development of the army's capabilities. The remaining funds will reportedly be spent on military maintenance and infrastructure.

Latvian authorities plan to implement several large defense projects in 2026. These include the acquisition of combat vehicles and anti-aircraft defense systems, as well as increasing ammunition supplies.
