The politician emphasized that Greenlanders "do not want to be Americans".
"We don't want to be part of the United States, but we seek close cooperation with the United States," Egede said.
Greenland as an autonomous territory has been part of Denmark since 1979. it has the legislative right to declare independence through a referendum. The USA and Denmark are the founding countries of NATO.
