The funeral began on January 4 at the Carter family farm near Plains, Georgia, where the politician grew up, and continued in Atlanta, where the casket was placed for a funeral ceremony at the local legislative building and the Carter Center.
On Tuesday morning, the casket was delivered to Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, D.C. From there, the funeral procession moved to the Congressional building. US Vice President Kamala Harris, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson, as well as lawmakers and members of the Supreme Court took part in the ceremony in the Rotunda, the central hall of the Capitol.
The casket with Carter's body will remain in the Congress until January 9. On January 9, the casket will be moved to the Washington Cathedral, where a memorial service will be held, and then it will be transported by special plane to the plains for burial.
