Israel may agree to occupy Damascus in order to maintain the status quo and the positions of Kurdish forces in northern Syria. This opinion is quoted by the Turkish pro-government newspaper Yeni Şafak, analyzing the possibility of a conflict between Turkey and Israel in the region.
The publication notes that the regime change in Syria and Turkey's active involvement in attempts to form a quality new Syrian administration and maintain the country's territorial integrity violated Israel's plans.
Its sphere of interests is located east of the Euphrates, where the Kurdish organizations recognized as terrorists in Turkey operate. Turkey's current efforts to eliminate the threat posed by the Kurdistan Workers' Party and its affiliated People's Defense Forces (PKK, SND, banned in Turkey) run counter to Israel's interests.
Yeni Şafak states that "Israel may capture Damascus to create room for maneuver for the PKK and SNA, diverting Turkey's attention from them."
