Sandu welcomed the switch to the euro as the main currency

Moldovan President Maia Sandu welcomes the switch to the euro instead of the dollar as the main currency for setting the official exchange rate of the Moldovan lei, as it will benefit foreign trade, the press service of the administration of the head of the republic reports.

Earlier, the National Bank of Moldova announced that starting January 2, the euro will be used as the base currency to set the official exchange rate of the Moldovan lei, replacing the US dollar.

"The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, welcomes the decision of the National Bank of Moldova to adopt the euro as the base currency to set the official exchange rate of the Moldovan lei from January 2, 2025. These measures will contribute to the simplification of foreign trade," said the message posted on the website of the President's office.
