Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the USA, has died

The Carter Center non-governmental organization on Sunday confirmed the death of Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, who was in office from 1977 to 1981. "Our founder, former US President Jimmy Carter, died today in Plains," says the organization's X page.

Earlier, The Washington Post reported on Carter's death, citing the son of former head of state James Carter. He said his father died Sunday at his home in Georgia, but did not give a cause of death.

The death of Carter, who turned 100 years old on October 1, was also reported by the local newspaper The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

As the publication writes, Carter, a Democrat, was able to "change the understanding of the lives of presidents after their term ends." He left the White House after just one term as head of state.
