The inmates of one of the prisons in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, took advantage of the discontent and demonstrations that began with the results of the elections in the country, and raised a riot. During the clashes with the prisoners, 33 people were killed, 15 were injured, more than 1,500 prisoners escaped from the prison, the BBC reports.

150 of the escaped prisoners were returned. Demonstrations in Mozambique began on December 23, when the Supreme Court of the country confirmed the victory of the ruling Frelimo party, which has ruled the country since 1975, in the elections held in October.

According to the official results of the elections, Daniel Chapo was re-elected president, having received 71% of the votes. According to the Mozambican Minister of Interior, at least 21 people have been killed during the demonstrations since December 23, and the total number of victims during the demonstrations held in the three months following the elections has reached about 150.
