According to Chinese scientists, regular consumption of whole grains can help maintain memory and mental clarity in old age. The study results were published in the journal Food and Function (F&F).
More than 5,000 people participated in the study, with an average age of 64. Researchers in Chongqing and Beijing analyzed the participants' diets and compared the data with the results of cognitive tests assessing memory, attention and mental speed.
The results showed that those who consumed approximately 75 grams of whole grains per day were 18% less likely to have mild cognitive impairment and performed better overall on all tests. A particularly strong correlation was observed between the amount of whole grains in the diet and verbal memory and concentration.
According to scientists, the positive effect may be related to the high content of fiber, B vitamins, magnesium and antioxidants in whole grains. All of these substances help protect neurons and maintain vascular health.
