Famous nutritional supplements that cause hypertension

The American scientists from the South-Western University of Texas have discovered a worrying mechanism that connects common food supplements to the development of hypertension. It turned out that the phosphates from recycled foods can penetrate the brain and cause a dangerous chain reaction that leads to a stable increase in pressure. The study was published in the CIRCULATION in the scientific journey.

Phosphate supplements (E338-E343, E450-E452) are widely used in the food industry as preservatives and stabilizers. They meet sausage, melted cheeses, carbonated drinks and other long-term storage products. Modern people use them 2-3 times more than the recommended norm, even not even not knowing it.

The group has found that the surplus of phosphates dramatically increases the level of FGF23 protein in the blood. The protein crosses the blood-braining barrier and activates the FGFR4 receptors in the stem of the brain. This causes a chain reaction, burdening the sympathetic nervous system. The result is a steady increase in pressure even in a state of rest.

Researchers have found a way to block this dangerous mechanism. Attempts have shown that the braking of the FGFR4 receptor prevents the sharp decline in pressure. This opens new perspectives to create targeted drugs against hypertension.
