The majority of Germany’s residents support the introduction of state control over gasoline and diesel fuel prices amid sharp increases in fuel costs. According to a NIM Institute survey, 71% of respondents favor such a measure, reports DW.
The German government is considering the possibility of setting maximum prices for automotive fuel. This measure could replace the current fuel tax exemption, which expires at the end of the year.
Additionally, 66% of survey participants expressed support for implementing a windfall tax on oil companies; these companies are making significant profits amid fuel shortages. The fuel shortage is largely linked to the war in Iran, which has increased pressure on energy markets.
Other measures to support motorists have received less backing. 56% of respondents favor increasing the size of tax reductions for working commuters. Direct payments to low-income drivers are supported by 52% of those surveyed.
The study’s results indicate that the most popular measures among Germany’s residents are limiting fuel prices and imposing an additional windfall tax on oil companies.
