Borrell called on EU countries to borrow to help Ukraine

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, called on the member countries of the association to take on new debt obligations in order to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
The head of European diplomacy gave his interpretation of the report of former Italian Prime Minister and ex-head of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi, released in September of this year, in which he assessed the EU's need for investment in its own defense over the next ten years at 500 billion euros.
“Where will this money come from? Should we wait for the EU's new multiannual budget to be drafted in 2028? I don't think.
Countries can take on new EU debt obligations, as during the coronavirus,” Borrell said, noting that it is necessary to finance, first of all, military assistance to Ukraine.
Earlier, Borrell stated that the total volume of military assistance to Ukraine from the countries of the European Union (EU) reached 110 billion euros. According to him, the amount of funds allocated for the military needs of Kyiv is 42 billion euros. He noted that by the end of 2024 this figure will reach 45 billion.
