South Korea's opposition leader accused the president of trying to usurp power

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of South Korea's leading "Toburo" party, called the introduction of martial law by President Yun Seok-yeol an "attempted coup d'état." KBS TV channel quotes the words of the politician.

"The essence of these events is that the president wanted to become a real monarch, this is a palace coup," Lee Jeyi said.

"Yun Seok Yeol wanted to bring all constitutional and state bodies under his control," the politician claims.

Earlier, the police announced that they had received a statement from the opposition MPs, who accused the president of attempting "rebellion" against the state system, in connection with the investigation.

The President's staff emphasized that the head of state acted in accordance with the law.
