Indonesia warns of increasing activity of the Karangetang volcano

Indonesian authorities have announced increased activity at the Karangetang volcano on the island of Sivu, which could send powerful pyroclastic flows - hot volcanic gases, ash and rock debris - from its summit. This is reported by the Antara agency, referring to the data of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the country.

"Beware of pyroclastic flows when the old lava dome on top of the mountain collapses," the agency quoted the head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid.

According to him, pyroclastic flows are formed from the volcano due to the accumulation of lava and mud flows during the rains.

According to the agency's experts, the magma accumulating inside the volcano will move from the depths of the crater to the surface. Observers recorded columns of smoke 200 meters high.

There are almost 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Karangetang is considered one of the most active. Due to its structure, eruptions are often accompanied by strong lava flows.
