During a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Bishkek, Russian President Vladimir Putin touched upon Armenia's intention to join the European Union and its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.
According to Putin, the adoption of a law on starting the process of joining another organization actually means a declaration of withdrawal from the existing integration union.
"The adoption of a law on starting the procedure for joining another organization means a declaration of withdrawal from the current organization," Putin said, speaking about the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union.
The Russian President also proposed giving Armenian citizens the opportunity to choose whether to join the EU and find out what they want.
At the same time, Putin noted that Moscow expects Yerevan to clarify its future choice regarding the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union as soon as possible, so that Russia understands how to build future relations with Armenia.
Earlier during the same meeting, Putin stated that Armenia’s aspiration to join the EU is a legitimate right, but it creates difficulties given the country’s membership in the EAEU.
Let us recall that Nikol Pashinyan, for his part, previously stated that Armenia is moving towards meeting EU standards while maintaining its membership in the EAEU. According to him, if combining the two directions becomes impossible, the further choice will be made together with the citizens of Armenia.
