Mikhail Drapaty, whose appointment as the new Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was announced by Vladimir Zelensky on Tuesday, has announced that he has assumed his duties. "I have assumed the duties of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Drapati wrote on his Facebook page, announcing his first "personnel decision," which he claimed was supported by Zelensky.
He is referring to Igor Skibyuk, the new chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Zelensky's decree appointing Drapati has not yet been published. Moreover, according to Ukrainian legislation, the appointment may cause complications.
According to the law, Zelensky can appoint a new commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces only on the recommendation of the current defense minister, who is currently absent from Ukraine.
