Scientists have warned of the high dangers of electric scooters for children

American hospitals have seen an increase in serious injuries among children using electric scooters, electric bicycles and other micromobility devices. In some cases, these trips have resulted in death. Scientists have warned parents about the dangers of this vehicle. The study was published in JAMA Surgery.

"We are seeing an alarming increase in serious injuries among children using electric scooters and electric bicycles," said Brianna Emre, director of pediatric trauma at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. "It is important that parents understand the risks before allowing their children to ride them."

According to the expert, the most dangerous incidents happen when a child is hit by a car, most often on the way to school, on the sidewalk or on the road.

"Many people are driving with headphones, some are texting and distracted, and during those ten seconds of inattention, they don't have time to notice the car," Emr explained.

Speed makes injuries particularly severe. while a regular bicycle moves at a speed of 10-15 km/h, electric scooters and electric bicycles reach speeds of up to 30 km/h and more.

"Children are getting injuries that we used to see only after motorcycle accidents," the doctor concluded.

Typical consequences include traumatic brain injuries, fractures of ribs, arms and legs, as well as damage to internal organs. Sometimes children fall due to bumps or potholes. the small wheels of scooters do not cope well with uneven surfaces. Battery burns also occur, causing burns.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 16 not be allowed to ride electric scooters. Emr notes that even older teenagers are not always ready for such responsibility.

According to the expert, it is important to check the brakes, headlights and wheels before each drive, use reflective clothing and turn on the lights at night.

"Don't listen to music, don't text while driving and always slow down if you see an obstacle or pothole," added Emr.
