Taiwan's Defense Minister Wellington Koo said China's actual blockade of the island would be an act of war and would have far-reaching consequences for international trade. According to CNN, the head of the military department made such a statement against the backdrop of Chinese military exercises.

"If you really want to implement the so-called blockade, which, according to international law, is to ban all planes and ships from entering that area, then according to the UN resolutions, it is considered a form of war," Wellington said.

He warned that the blockade of the island would have consequences beyond Taiwan's borders and the international community could not simply "sit back and watch".
