In the US, ten people were hospitalized with E. coli from McDonald's

Nearly 50 people in the United States contracted E. coli from burgers from McDonald's fast food restaurants, including ten hospitalizations and another death, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports.

The E. coli outbreak began being reported on September 27, according to the CDC. A total of 49 cases of the disease were recorded in 10 states.

"Of the 28 people with information, ten were hospitalized and one developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure. One elderly person died in Colorado," the agency said in a statement on its website.

As the CDC notes, most of the sick people ate the so-called quarter-pound cheeseburger, or “Royal Cheeseburger.” Doctors believe the true scale of the E. coli outbreak may be larger because not everyone goes to the doctor or gets tested for intestinal infections.
