Scientists have found the wear of knee cartilage without a mission to slow down

Scientists from Utah and Stanford University have found that walking in a little inside or towards walking, decreases over the interior of the knee joint and slows the degeneration of cartilage in the case of osteoarthritis. The results were published in The Lancet Rheumatology.

The study took part in 68 men and women who had osteoarthritis from light to moderate knee. In the laboratory, scientists have analyzed the characteristics of each volunteer. Through computer modeling, researchers assessed the workload caused by the volunteer joints in four versions, a natural, leg turned in five or ten degrees inside or out.

Half of the participants trained to walk a personally selected foot in the "gentle" slope (six training), while others did not undergo a step. The effectiveness of the method was assessed at the beginning of the study and a year later through MRT and pain research.

It turned out that the workload on the knee fell by 4%, while in the control group, it increased by more than 3% in the control group. The scanning of the MRI also showed that the company's degeneration was slower in the inner part of the first group of participants.

Osteoarthritis most often affects the internal side of the knee, and the overload accelerates its development. Currently, treatment is usually limited to painkillers, physical therapy and surgical methods.

According to co-author Valentina Majeli, the new method can delay the need for knee replacement surgery. This is especially important, because after early replacement, double interventions are often needed.
