Sausages, bacon and some processed meats can cause colon cancer.TASS:endocrinologist Ekaterina Yershova told
"One serving of fast food does not cause cancer. The risk may increase with regular use of individual components of such food. The most convincing data was obtained for processed meats: sausages, bacon, salami and some processed meat products," said the endocrinologist.
Ershova explained that in 2015, an expert panel of the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that processed meat increases the risk of colon cancer. According to the data presented, daily consumption of 50 grams of processed meat was associated with an approximately 18 percent increase in relative risk. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis also found an association between high consumption of highly processed foods and a small increased risk of colon cancer.
However, according to the expert, such observational data do not allow to conclude that the degree of food processing is the only cause of the disease.
