Scientists warn that polluted drinking water damages brain

According to the new study of Chinese scientists, the long-term effects of the low level of Per-Polyfiling materials (PFAS) can disrupt the brain function, damage the neurons and disrupt the memory and behavior. The results are concerned that widespread PFASs are a threat to health, even at drinking water and the environment already found in the environment. The study was published in the magazine of "Dangerous Materials" (JHM).

PFASs are used in a large number of consumer goods, from non-pounding kitchen dishes to packaging, waterproof clothing, carpet cleaners and fire extinguishing foam. Because they are resistant to decay, they are accumulated in the soil, water and living organisms. People can be subjected to drinking water, dust, food, household chemicals and even cosmetics.

During the new experience, the mice was given water, which contained 17 types of PFAS with concentrations that correspondred to natural sources. Seven weeks later, four substances (including PFOS) have accumulated in their brain than their blood.

The rodents have been declining the activity of the brain beta rhythms (which are responsible for attention and memory) and the growth of gamma waves associated with the cognitive burden. Animal behavior has also changed. In memory and anxiety tests they have less studied new areas, avoid open areas and worse distinct and unfamiliar subjects.

Microscopic analysis has shown a hippocampus injury that is a memory formation area. At the same time, even low pfas doses may disrupt the function of the brain in several directions, the accumulation of chemicals in tissues to genes and metabolism changes.

Scientists emphasize that the data has been received on mice, but they can also be appropriate for people.
