The plants that attract mosquitoes and help them survive

The scientists of the Ku's Royal Botanical Garden have found that the nectar of tropical plants such as Lantana Camara, the Gerch's oil plant (Ricinus Communis) and Cascabela Thevetia are especially nutritious and attractive for mosquitoes. The results of the study were published in Scientific Reports.

"Mosquitoes are one of the most dangerous animals on the planet, which bear a number of dangerous and deadly diseases, including malaria," explained Professor Phil Stevenson.

The scientist added that mosquitoes have a lot of high energy requirements. For food, these insects need not only blood but also floral nectar. The Nectar and his "attractiveness" play an important role in maintaining the number of mosquitoes and further disseminations.

For the study, scientists have chosen three types of plants in tropical zones, Lantana Vaultosa, Gerchakan oil plant and Peruvian trajectory. The analysis of their nectar chemical composition has shown that these plants are especially nutritious for mosquitoes. In areas where more of these three plots meet, the epidemiological situation of diseases transmitted through mosquitoes may deteriorate.

Stevenson noted that traditional methods of combating mosquitoes such as insecticides and mosquito networks become less effective due to adaptation of insect. As a new approach, scientists have offered to remove the plants that capture mosquitoes from residential areas. Researchers also hope that this discovery can help not only fight mosquitoes, but also to protect useful powdies such as bees.
