Scientists explain why genetic mutations are not enough for cancer development

Scientists from the American Medical Center have found that not only genetic mutations are needed for cancer development, but also other risk factors, such as chronic inflammation. The results of the study were published in the Cancer Discovery magazine.

Scientists say that not all smokers have lung cancer. Smoking is a primary carcinogenic factor that causes cell mutations, but these cells may require additional mechanisms to form a tumor.

In order to discover these mechanisms, scientists have tested a double test on mice. The animals have been given two medications, one to generate thousands of mutations in cells, and the other to cause local inflammation in the skin tissue. As expected, cancer was developing in almost all cases, with a combined effect. Scientists have assumed that if inflammation, the immune system does not correct or destroy the mutated cells.

Researchers have made an additional successivity of the entire genome to confirm that the mutations arising from the first cancer have potential for cancer development. However, they demanded inflammatory signals to form tumors.

Scientists say their discovery helps to understand that the high risk of genetically inherited cancer can be "suppressed" by avoiding inflammation. This can be achieved through a healthy lifestyle, with the right diet, avoiding alcohol and cigarettes, micropens and heavy metal products.
