The Prime Minister of Lebanon left for Syria for the first time in 15 years

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has arrived in Syria, Al Mayadeen TV channel reports. Since 2010, this is the first official visit of the head of the Lebanese government to Damascus.

According to the TV channel, negotiations between Mikati and the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, began in the People's Palace, which is the residence of the head of state.

The decision to send the delegation to Damascus was made on January 7 at the meeting of the Lebanese cabinet.
On January 3, Mikati had a telephone conversation with al-Sharaa and discussed with him the prospects for the development of bilateral relations.

"We came to a general opinion that the establishment of contacts at a high level is in the interests of Lebanon, Syria and the entire region," the Prime Minister said after the conversation.
