South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party submitted a motion to impeach President and Acting Prime Minister Han Deok-soo to parliament on December 26. According to the law, parliament is now required to vote on the issue within 24 to 72 hours. :
The Democratic Party plans to hold it on December 27. The party took this step after Han Deok-soo refused to appoint the three missing judges to the Constitutional Court until a compromise was reached between the parties.
Yonhap reports that the opposition-controlled parliament on the morning of December 26 voted in favor of the appointment of three nominated candidates for the post of judges. If appointed by the acting president, they will join six other judges and the Constitutional Court will be able to hear the case of ousted President Yun Seok-yeol. In the coming months, the court should decide whether to uphold the parliament's decision on the impeachment of the president.
If the court, however, decides to remove the president from power, it will be necessary to hold extraordinary presidential elections within 60 days. The decision sparked outrage among the country's residents, and parliament quickly and unanimously voted to lift martial law.
As a result, Yoon Seok Yeol agreed to cancel his order.
