The Spanish court did not grant amnesty to Puigdemont

The Supreme Court of Spain did not grant amnesty to the former head of the government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and upheld the national warrant for his arrest. This was stated in the press release of the legal body. According to its data, the Supreme Court "recognized that the crime of embezzlement of state funds, which Puigdemont is accused of, is not subject to amnesty." The court also "maintains Puigdemont's "national arrest order". On June 11, the amnesty law for those involved in the separatist process of Catalonia came into force. It was approved on May 30, thanks in part to the support of Puigdemont's "Together for Catalonia" party. The initiative was registered in the Parliament by the Labor Socialist Party of the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez. Courts are responsible for enforcing the law. The amnesty is aimed at "normalizing coexistence" in Catalonia and was agreed to by parties supporting the region's secession from Spain in exchange for parliamentary support for Sánchez's candidacy for prime minister. Without it, he would not be able to assume the position of the head of the government again. The law met with sharp criticism from the right-wing opposition. In Spain, thousands of people protested against the initiative.
