May 9 is a day of special significance for the Armenian people, as it unites three important historical events. That is why it is customary to call this day triton in Armenia.
It symbolizes victory, struggle and national memory. First of all, May 9 is the day of victory in the Great Patriotic War. On this day in 1945, the Second World War ended in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians participated in the war, many of whom died on the front.
Armenian soldiers and commanders had a great role in the fight against fascism, and their heroism is still remembered and appreciated. May 9 is also associated with the liberation of Shushi, one of the most important victories of the first Artsakh war. On May 8-9, 1992, the Armenian forces carried out a military operation and liberated the city of Shushi, which had a strategically important position at that time. Stepanakert was shelled from Shushi for a long time, and the liberation of the city was of great importance for the further course of the war. On the same day, the anniversary of the establishment of the Artsakh Defense Army is also celebrated. In 1992, as a result of the unification of various volunteer detachments, a unified military structure was created, the purpose of which was to organize the defense of Artsakh.
The formation of the Defense Army was an important step during the war years. Thus, May 9 is not only a holiday, but also a day of remembrance and pride for the Armenian people. It unites the struggle and victories of different generations, reminding about the value of peace and the importance of protecting the motherland.
