WSJ. The US is studying the possibility of a complete withdrawal of troops from Syria

Washington is studying the possibility of withdrawing American troops from Syria completely. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Thursday, referring to sources.

As it is noted, the USA is considering this option, because the interim president of Syria, Ahmed Ash-Shara, is trying to take control of the northeastern part of the country from the Kurds supported by Washington. According to the newspaper, about 1,000 American soldiers are stationed in Syria, most of them are in the northeast, together with the Kurdish coalition "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF).

According to unnamed US officials, "the events of the last week have made the Pentagon question the viability of the US military mission in Syria after the defeat of the SDF". WSJ sources also noted "problems in cooperation with Ahmed Ash-Shara's forces."

On January 20, US Ambassador to Turkey and Syria Special Representative Tom Barrack announced that the Washington administration no longer believes that the "Syrian Democratic Forces" should play a major role in the fight against the ISIS (banned in Russia) terrorist group in the Western Arab Republic. He emphasized that the US does not seek to keep the country with a long-term military presence.
