Residents of Kiev faced acute shortage of basic food this week. Buckwheat, sugar, rice, green onions and lettuce have disappeared from the counters of a number of supermarkets in the capital, writes The New York Times. According to the periodical, commercial chains have confirmed supply problems in the last week.
Stocks of dairy products, meat, fresh fruits and vegetables have decreased. Instant noodles, baby formula and pet food are also missing from some stores. Food shortages have also been reported amid a significant drop in Ukraine's grain exports.
In the first half of August, compared to the same period last year, Ukraine's wheat exports decreased by 4.3 times, spring by 5.6 times, and corn by 2.7 times.
