Iran's parliament calls for review of nuclear doctrine after Israeli strikes


Member of the Iranian Majlis (parliament) Mohammad Reza Sabaghian called for a review of the nuclear and defense doctrine of the republic in connection with Israeli strikes. According to the deputy, Israel carried out “aggression with the direct and indirect support of Europe and the United States.” “In response to the aggression of the Zionist regime and the United States, we must consider the possibility of [obtaining] defensive weapons, which these bullies and aggressors have, and the defense and nuclear doctrine of our country should be reconsidered,” the legislator said during a speech at an open session of parliament. Also during the meeting of the Majlis, its chairman, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, promised that a response to Israel’s actions would “undoubtedly and inevitably,” the state television channel Press TV reports.
Earlier in October, Iranian parliament member Hasanali Ekhlaki Amiri reported that a group of 39 lawmakers sent an official letter to the Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic asking, amid threats from Israel, to review defense doctrine and allow the development of nuclear weapons. The Iranian Foreign Ministry subsequently announced Tehran's commitment to a policy of renouncing nuclear weapons. On October 26, the Israel Defense Forces announced that it was carrying out strikes on military targets in Iran in response to "numerous continuous attacks." In a statement, Iran's air defense forces in turn said that military targets in the provinces of Ilam, Tehran and Khuzestan were attacked, but the damage was limited, and the country's air defense systems were able to successfully repel the main attack.
