The head of the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Elon Musk has called for a reorganization of the North Atlantic Alliance.
“NATO needs a complete reorganization,” he wrote in X, according to TASS, in response to a post by Senator Mike Lee (Republican) from Utah that NATO has been “rejected” and the “cold war” is long over.
Musk has repeatedly criticized US transatlantic policy and called for cuts to European defense spending. The businessman believes that such spending is unacceptable, given Washington’s significant budget deficit and growing government spending.
On December 20, the Financial Times reported that Trump, through his representatives, informed a number of European allies in NATO that he intends to demand from them an increase in defense spending of 5% of their GDP.
