Elon Musk, the head of the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has called for a restructuring of the North Atlantic Alliance.
“NATO needs a complete restructuring,” he wrote in X, in response to a post by Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) that NATO has “exhausted its usefulness” and the Cold War era is long over.
Musk has previously repeatedly criticized US transatlantic policy and called for cuts to defense spending in Europe. The entrepreneur believes that such spending is unacceptable in the context of significant budget deficits in Washington and growing government spending.
On December 20, the Financial Times reported that Trump, through his representatives, had notified a number of European NATO allies of his intention to demand that they increase defense spending to 5% of their GDP.
