Turkey has increased the transit fee for merchant ships through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles

The transit fee for foreign commercial ships through the Bosphorus and Dardanelle Straits has been increased to $5.07 per so-called net tonnage (tonna netto) since July 1, while the fee introduced a year ago was $4.42. The relevant decision was adopted by the Ministry of Transport of Turkey. The document stated that the tariff increase is planned. The Minister of Transport, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, informed earlier that the toll revision is being carried out in 2022 by the President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan. by the decree of October 7, 1963 signed and in accordance with the Montreux Convention regulating navigation in the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits, a fee for medical inspection, lighthouse and ship evacuation services is charged for the transit of merchant ships through them. Since 1983, the fees have been calculated on the basis of the gold franc and amounted to 0.80 dollars for the net tonnage of the ship. 2022 in October, that order was changed, and the tariff was increased to 4.08 dollars. The Turkish authorities informed earlier that the increase in the duty for the use of the straits for the purpose of transiting foreign ships brings to the treasury 900 million dollars annually.
