"Armenian Union of Romania" passed the electoral threshold and received a mandate in the country's parliament

in Romania in 2024 In the parliamentary elections held on December 1, the Armenian Union of Romania (ARU), according to preliminary results, received 4,748 votes and overcame the electoral threshold provided by law for organizations representing national minorities.

This is reported by Armenpress.

As a result of the elections, the RMU will have one mandate in the newly elected parliament, which will be given to Varuzhan Pambukchyan, who heads the list. The latter is the vice-president of the Armenian Union of Romania, the organization's permanent deputy since the 1996 parliamentary elections, and will represent the Romanian-Armenian community in the country's parliament for the eighth time.

It is noteworthy that a significant part of the votes of the RMU is received by non-Armenians. although the community has a centuries-old history. The number of Armenians with an Armenian identity is quite small, and Pambukchyan, in addition to issues related to the community, continues to deal with a number of important legislative initiatives.

As a result, in the previous elections, the RMU received many votes from the representatives of high technologies (IT), and in this election, from the representatives of the agricultural sectors. All regions of Romania voted for the Armenian Union of Romania.

RMU received the most votes in the following marzes. Baku (419), capital Bucharest (398), Constanta (189), Timis (180), Harghita (174), Maramures (172), Suceava (162).

As for the Romanian political forces, according to the preliminary results of the elections, no political force managed to get even 25 percent of the votes, as a result of which seven political forces will go to two chambers of the Parliament.

Since 1996, Varuzhan Pamboukchian has been the head of the National Minorities parliamentary faction, which is an unprecedented phenomenon in the parliamentary history of Romania.

Traditionally, he either heads the Romania-Armenia friendship group of the Parliament or is a member of it.
