Hungary goes into austerity mode. metro and trams will travel more slowly

The authorities of Budapest are setting electricity saving measures against the background of the tense situation in the country's energy system, HVG reported.

As Mayor Gergey Karachon announced, the traffic schedules of the metro and tram lines will be changed. the wagons will gather momentum more slowly, due to which the duration of the trip will increase by several minutes. It is expected that this will allow to save about 15 MWh of electricity per day.

In addition, some trolleybuses will be temporarily replaced by modern diesel buses equipped with energy-efficient air conditioning systems on certain routes on weekdays.

According to the mayor, Hungary's energy system has faced one of the most serious tests in recent decades, so even a small saving will help avoid power supply interruptions.

As part of measures to reduce energy consumption, the decorative lighting of the parliament building will be turned off in Budapest, and the lighting of the buildings of the Buda Castle will be gradually turned off until Monday.

The situation at the "Paksh" nuclear power plant is also an additional pressure on the energy system. On Saturday, the first power unit of the station was stopped again due to the low water level in the Danube. According to Peter Madyar, the leader of the Tisa opposition party, the plant's current capacity is about 480 megawatts, instead of the usual 2,000 megawatts.
