Italy has restored border controls for arrivals from Spain due to the Ceuta crisis

Italy has begun random checks on passengers arriving from Spain, temporarily restoring border controls due to the migration crisis in Ceuta, El Mundo reported.

Since Saturday, police officers have been checking the documents of passengers arriving from Spain at the country's airports and seaports. This measure was applied after the decision of Georgia Maloney's government to temporarily suspend the operation of the Schengen agreement in this direction.

The occasion was the large-scale migration crisis unfolding in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where about 60,000 migrants illegally crossed the border from Morocco. According to official data, at least 67 people died as a result of the crisis.

Against this background, Spain has started to install protective barriers at the Tarakhal border checkpoint. The head of the autonomous city of Ceuta, Juan Jesus Vivas, said that it is too early to talk about the settlement of the situation, because several thousand migrants are still in the city and are waiting to return to Morocco.

He also called for enhanced security measures and emphasized that Ceuta and Melilla are the only land borders of the European Union on the African continent.
