Former OPEC Secretary General Rene Ortiz died. This was announced by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), expressing condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Rene Ortiz held the post of OPEC Secretary General from January 1979 to June 1981. Before that, he represented Ecuador in the Organization's Economic Commission, was the governor of Ecuador in OPEC, and also headed the country's Ministry of Energy twice.
OPEC noted that Ortiz's contribution to the development of the global oil sector and the activities of the organization "will be remembered by more than one generation of energy sector specialists."
