UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the establishment of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and calls on all parties to respect all its provisions, UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
"The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and appreciates the role of the United Nations in facilitating the establishment of a ceasefire. The Secretary-General hopes that this ceasefire will pave the way for negotiations and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which is aimed at a long-term solution to the conflict.
He calls on all parties to fully respect the ceasefire and fulfill their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law," the statement said. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations supports "all efforts to stop hostilities and alleviate the suffering of the population on both sides of the Blue Line (the border between Lebanon and Israel, named after the color of the peacekeepers' helmets, TASS)".
The head of the global organization also expressed hope that this agreement will contribute to the achievement of "long-term and comprehensive peace" in the Middle East.
