The armed forces of Iran and Azerbaijan held a joint military exercise on the coast of Araks, on the border of the Western Atrepatan province and Nakhichevan. The declared purpose of the exercises is the fight against terrorism, ensuring the protection of the Araqs dam, sharing experience, and improving the level of cooperation.
This is the first military exercise of the two countries in such a format. Until now, the exercises had been conducted primarily at the naval level and were multilateral.
It became known about the possibility of holding a border exercise in 2022. October, from the telephone conversation between the head of the Iranian Armed Forces and the Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan. In September 2023, the 3rd meeting of the commission on the development of military cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan was held, within which issues of cooperation in the military sphere were also discussed.
