WSJ: Canada fears that the US may violate its sovereignty in the situation around Greenland

If the United States tries to annex Greenland, it may later decide to violate the sovereignty of neighboring Canada as well. An anonymous Canadian member of parliament expressed such an opinion in a conversation with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

"There is a non-zero probability that Canada's sovereignty may be violated. And if the sovereignty of Greenland is violated, we can become the next," he told the newspaper.

Earlier, the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported that the Canadian armed forces have developed an action plan in case of a possible US invasion. At the same time, Canadian official sources noted that they consider the US invasion of their territory unlikely.

As reported by the Bloomberg agency, referring to an official participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos, there is a risk that Europe may agree to transfer Greenland to the United States in an attempt to please Washington.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated the need to join Greenland to the US. During his first presidential term, he offered to buy the island, and in March 2025 he expressed confidence that it could be annexed. Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen, in addition to alliance obligations within the framework of NATO, signed

Treaty on the Defense of Greenland, according to which the United States is obliged to protect the island from possible aggression.
