Commenting on the ongoing developments in Georgia, political commentator Hakob Badalyan writes:
"What is the North Caucasus? A powder keg "under" Russia. Do you think the European Union wants to have a direct border with that powder keg? In the event that one of the fundamental targets of the Euro-Atlantic strategy is to heat under that barrel at every convenient moment. The political leadership of Georgia understood this fact much earlier, that the European Union in no way wants to be a direct border with the North Caucasian powder keg. The rest is rhetoric.
In that case, the question will arise as to why Georgia was granted membership status in December of the previous year.
It was given not with the intention of becoming a member, but because.
1. There was a need to grant that status to Ukraine and Moldova, but there was no objective reason not to do so with regard to Georgia. Therefore, if Ukraine was granted that status and Georgia was not, it would be a blatant double standard, including in the eyes of the Georgian public, which would strengthen the position of the Georgian Dream.
2nd They gave, well imagining that Georgia would go to the adoption of the famous laws that the Georgian Dream had announced even before it got that status. Accordingly, the calculation was that these laws would then be an occasion to revoke membership status or freeze it.
At the same time, it will also be an opportunity to make a pre-election and post-election calculation to the Georgian public that Georgia had come so close to the EU, but the government "spoiled" everything. The question will arise, why did "Dream" adopt the laws and give the EU- on that occasion. Let's go up. because the political elite of Georgia perfectly understood that the issue of EU membership is a political leverage for them, not the real motive of the European Union.
