Scientists surprised Mercury size change

Mercury has decreased by a few miles since his birthdays. The new calculation method allowed scientists to clarify this figure and reduce the dissemination of previous assessments. The work was published in AGU Advances magazine.

Since its decoration, Mercury has been frozen and shrinking after its decoration, both after baking a biscuit or pie. At the same time, the area was cracked, and the tectonic cracks raised the earthly sections, compensating the volume of the planet. Previously, Mercury radius decreased by 1 to 7 kilometers, but various methods have given many different results.

Geologists Stefan Laves and Christian Klimccca offered a new method. Instead of analyzing all the cracks, they assessed how the contraction "absorbs" the largest of them, then scale the whole planet. This approach has shown that Mercury radius decreased by 2-3.5 kilometers due to cracks. Given the other processes caused by cooling, the final reduction of the radius is estimated at 2.7-5.6 km.

According to the authors, the method can be applied to other planets that have faults, such as Mars, which will help to better understand their geological history.
