Vitamin B1 has proven its usefulness in the fight against Sepsis

Belgian researchers at the Vib-Ugent Inflammatory Research Center have found a way to prevent dangerous metabolism disorder during Sepsis using vitamin B1 and glucose combination. The results of their work have been published in the Magazine Cell Reports.

Sepsis is a dangerous and often mortal response to the body. Differentiated by ordinary diseases, it affects not one organ, but on the entire organism. The immune system "gets out of control", which causes systemic inflammation that can lead to a leaning of vital organs. According to the WTO (World Health Organization), Sepsis takes up to 11 million lives every year.

One of the main mechanisms for the development of Sepsis is the sharp accumulation of lactic acid (lactate). The organism usually decomposes the glucose of the material called Piruvat, which is then used to produce energy. However, in the case of Sepsis, Piruvat turns into a lactate that undermines the acidic balance and leads to a drop in blood pressure. At the same time, the lack of vitamin B1 undermines the activities of mitochondries, cells "energy stations", which worsens the situation.

During the experiments made on mice, Professor Claude Liberty team found that the import of vitamin B1 significantly reduces the level of lactate and increases the level of survival. And when the glucose is also injected, the body begins to produce energy again instead of producing harmful lactic acid.

"This is a simple but powerful mechanism," the authors said. "It can quickly adapt to the use of emergencies in the intensive care unit." The next step will be experimenting with larger animals and choosing safe doses for people.
