The EU will tighten migration controls at the borders of the Russian Federation and Belarus

The leaders of the European Union decided to increase migration controls on the borders with Russia and Belarus. This is reflected in the final statement of the summit on migration issues, TASS reports.

The document emphasizes that neither Russia, nor Belarus, nor any other states can use European values, including the right to asylum, to the detriment of democratic principles. The authors of the document noted that in case of exceptional circumstances, special measures are necessary, and the European Council is determined to take all steps to effectively control external borders.

It is also indicated that the European Union is ready to provide practical assistance to states neighboring Russia and Belarus in the fight against migration flows in order to “stop their political instrumentalization.” In the future, questions about specific actions to strengthen control will be resolved at the level of the EU Council.

In July, the head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Agne Bilotaite, said that the country's border service was instructed to prepare an action plan and formulate priorities for strengthening the border with the Russian Federation.

Earlier, Belarus assessed the situation on the country’s western borders.
