The EU is discussing Europe's readiness for winter with the threat of cutting off gas supplies to the Russian Federation

The possible cessation of Russian gas supplies to Europe in transit through Ukraine after 2024 due to the expiration of a bilateral contract creates risks for the energy security of the European Union, which is urgently trying to find alternative sources. This was reported by Bloomberg in connection with a meeting of the heads of energy departments of EU countries in Luxembourg on Tuesday.
According to him, the ministers will discuss “the continent’s readiness for winter” in conditions where the threat of cutting off Russian fuel supplies has already led “to rising energy prices and putting pressure on the regional network.” Ukraine has been a key route for gas supplies to Europe for many years and finding alternative gas flows will be extremely difficult, the publication says.
According to Bloomberg, the final decision on this problem “will most likely be made at the last minute or even early next year.” As Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak previously told reporters, the issue of gas supplies through Ukraine after 2024 should be decided by countries from The EU and Russia are waiting for the legal formalization of this issue.
The FT recalls the position of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who said in September that Ukraine will decide what to do with the pipeline, so it is also its responsibility.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky previously announced that Kyiv will not renew the agreement with Gazprom for the transit of Russian gas, which expires at the end of 2024. At the same time, he stated that after the expiration of the contract, Ukraine will, together with the EU, make a decision on the transit of Russian gas through its territory to Europe. Previously, experts interviewed by TASS also noted that the extension of the transit agreement is unlikely given the political situation, but EU countries will still be able to continue buying gas from the Russian Federation through auctions with capacity reservations and moving the gas delivery point.
