Scientists from Corneli University have developed a new vaccine that can provide long-term protection from Covid-19 and flu. The results of the study were published in Science Advances (Sciadv).
The new drug solves two main problems of existing vaccines, the need to keep it at extremely low temperatures and the lack of efficiency. The innovative vaccine not only provides protection from Covid-19 and the flu, but also does not require complex storage conditions, which greatly facilitates its transportation and use, especially in countries with limited resources.
The drug is based on the Visicular Stomatitis virus (VSV), which is safe for people. Scientists have changed it by removing basic proteins and adding anti-agencies to two viruses. This approach allows the immune system to develop protection at once of two diseases.
Special attention is paid to the duration of immune protection. During the experiments made on mice, the vaccine showed high efficiency. Eight months after the vaccine, the animals maintained a strong immunity. Moreover, when vaccinated mice was infected with Covid-19 and flu viruses, they did not show symptoms of the disease, and the tests were not viruses in their lung or brain tissue, which shows a high degree of protection.
Scientists believe that in order to maintain the immune protection, there may be a few years that will make a few years, which will significantly reduce the burden of healthcare systems.
