In Cyprus, the issue of opening additional checkpoints for the buffer zone will be discussed

Under the auspices of the United Nations, negotiations will be held in Nicosia on the opening of additional checkpoints for the Cyprus buffer zone, which separates the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

They will be attended by the leader of the Greek Cypriots, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, the leader of the Turkish Cypriots Ersin Tatar, as well as the special representative of the UN Secretary General on the island, the head of the UN.

The Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot delegations began preparations for this meeting after an informal dinner between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Christodoulides and Tatar, held in New York on October 15, 2024.

It was then agreed that the Cyprus settlement summit in 2025 would be preceded by the start of an intercommunal dialogue on the opening of new checkpoints in the island's neutral zone.
