Worries instead of euphoria
On January 14, the signing of the charter on strategic partnership between the Republic of Armenia and the United States of America took place in the US State Department in Washington.
Political scientist Suren Surenyants notes:
"The development of Armenian-American relations is important, such a document is even overdue, if we take into account the fact that, for example, Georgia signed such a document with Washington back in 2009.
The problem is not the cooperation, but, as my friend Karpis Pashoyan pointed out, the highly exaggerated and overestimated interpretation of that cooperation in the intra-Armenian environment.
The problem is not the content of the document, but the environment in which it was signed. The problem is that this document is being signed at a time when geopolitical antagonism has reached its peak and Russia-West relations resemble a zero-sum game.
Accordingly, if Armenia does not receive substantive support from Washington with this document, it may face concrete risks as a result of Russian opposition.
The problem is that we are dealing with a government that will use this document not to contribute to the real diversification of Armenia's foreign policy, but to change the country's strategic orientation.
This is where specific concerns are visible in the shadow of a positive event.
