Despite the potential benefits of the move, some New Yorkers and former prison officials have criticized the initiative, arguing that budget funds should be spent on more important needs, such as air conditioning for inmates and correctional staff. Benny Boschio, head of the Voluntary Corrections Association, also condemned the purchase of the games, saying authorities should spend the funds on essentials.
