Opposition candidate Orsi wins Uruguay's presidential election

The candidate of the opposition center-left Broad Front coalition, Yamandu Orsi, wins the second round of the presidential election in Uruguay. This is evidenced by the results of the vote count released by the Electoral Court after processing data from 81.26% of polling stations.

942,470 voters voted for Orsi. His opponent, candidate from the ruling center-right National Party Alvaro Delgado, was supported by 898,767. Delgado had already admitted his defeat in the elections and congratulated his opponent. The current President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, also congratulated Orsi on his victory. Orsi, who served as mayor of the Canelones department from 2015 to 2024, calls the fight against crime, which has increased in Uruguay in recent years, and the transit of drugs through the country, one of his priorities. The politician, backed by former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, also promises to create new jobs and increase wages for low-income workers.

In foreign policy, he highlights as a priority the need to accelerate integration processes within regional organizations, including the South American Common Market (Mercosur). During the election campaign, Orsi called the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro authoritarian and questioned the transparency of the vote count in the presidential elections that took place in the Bolivarian Republic on July 28. Maduro won them. The inauguration of the elected President of Uruguay will take place on March 1, 2025.
